{"id":122,"date":"2022-08-17T15:26:00","date_gmt":"2022-08-17T15:26:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/csct.or.th\/fabc\/?p=122"},"modified":"2022-10-15T07:12:14","modified_gmt":"2022-10-15T07:12:14","slug":"at-signis-world-congress-myanmars-cardinal-bo-lauds-role-of-media-in-promoting-peace","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/csct.or.th\/fabc\/at-signis-world-congress-myanmars-cardinal-bo-lauds-role-of-media-in-promoting-peace\/","title":{"rendered":"At SIGNIS World Congress, Myanmar\u2019s Cardinal Bo lauds role of media in promoting peace"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><strong>Cardinal Charles Maung Bo of Myanmar, president of the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.licas.news\/fabc\/\">Federation of Asian Bishops\u2019 Conferences<\/a>, hailed the role of media, especially Catholic media, in promoting peace.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am glad that SIGNIS raises awareness on the role of the media in propping conflict or promoting peace,\u201d said the cardinal in a message sent to the delegates at the&nbsp;<a href=\"http:\/\/swc2022.net\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">SIGNIS World Congress<\/a>&nbsp;in Seoul on Wednesday, August 17.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.licas.news\/signis\/\">SIGNIS is the World Catholic Association for Communication<\/a>, an organization whose mission is to \u201chelp transform cultures in the light of the Gospel by promoting human dignity, justice and reconciliation.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s gathering, which is taking place at&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/wwwe.sogang.ac.kr\/wwwe\/index_new.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Sogang University<\/a>&nbsp;in Seoul until August 19, carries the theme \u201cPeace in the Digital World.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am greatly enthused by the gathering of all men and women of good will, shepherding the world towards the greener pastures of peace in the digital world,\u201d Cardinal Bo said in his opening statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said working for peace \u201cis an ambitious project in a world spiraling into self mutilating discourses of war,\u201d but he said that as followers of Christ \u201cwe shall never bend our knees to the arrogance of violence or threat of Evil.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know that a suffocating darkness can be driven out by lighting a lamp of hope,\u201d said Cardinal Bo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Asian Church leader said that \u201cin an interconnected world that has become a digital village, the media has a robust role.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He noted that since the Vietnam war, which the cardinal said \u201cwas dubbed the first Television War which had great implications for ending that conflict,\u201d the media has been playing \u201ca great role in conflicts and peace making.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTotalitarian governments had used the media in history to manufacture consent for wars with disastrous consequences,\u201d he said, adding that wars in the Middle East \u201cwere a grim reminder the media could become a culpable criminal in geo strategic conflicts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardinal Bo said that with widespread access to the Internet, \u201csocial media has ushered in an utopia and dystopia\u201d that \u201chatred spirals out of control.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said Facebook has been accused of collusion by human rights groups in the conflict and displacement of minorities in his home country Myanmar in 2017.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said Twitter \u201chas become a virtual hell where evil concoct narratives of hatred, digital lynching that lead to real lynching.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cModern war starts in most cases with the bites and bits of social media by providing anonymity to purveyors of hatred,\u201d said the Church leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cReligious conflicts are configured and inflamed with the touch of digital screens,\u201d he said, adding that digital media \u201cis a power for good and a power for disaster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He likened digital media to fire \u201cthat could be used to cook life giving food or wild fires that destroy millions of acres of forests.\u201d He said digital media \u201cis a source of evil and good.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cardinal Bo said the choice is always in the users\u2019 hands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cLong before digital media was known, the book of Deuteronomy challenged human beings to choose life; in a surprisingly contemporary caution: \u2018I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cardinal said it is a \u201ctall order\u201d and a \u201cgreat challenge.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cI am glad that SIGNIS has taken up this challenge as an opportunity to initiate a worldwide discussion on the process of peace in a digital world,\u201d he told participants of the global gathering of Catholic communicators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEvery bite and bit counts,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Source &#8211;
